Following on from our introduction last week, we look first at our picks for Best Foreign Film. At this stage we are starting a conversation about who might be nominated from the record 92 submissions to the category this year. Once they have been announced, the fun really begins – we will try and use social media marketing analytics tools to predict the winner in February.
Best Foreign Film:On the social media marketing front, most films in this category have quite low budgets and so we’re not expecting too much until the nominations are announced. We chose this selection after reading a number of reviews, industry buzz and the number of times they appeared in articles predicting the nominations.
“A Fantastic Woman”(Chile)Synopsis: A transgender singer faces scorn and discrimination after the sudden death of her older boyfriend.
“First They Killed My Father”(Cambodia)Synopsis: Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung recounts the horrors she suffered as a child under the rule of the deadly Khmer Rouge.
Social Media Marketing of Note: Due to Angelina Jolie’s involvement, there has been a lot of organic chatter about the film (Both positive and negative)
“Foxtrot”(Israel)Synopsis: A troubled family face the facts when something goes terribly wrong at their son’s desolate military post.
“In the Fade”(Germany)Synopsis: Katja’s life collapses after the death of her husband and son in a bomb attack. After a time of mourning and injustice, Katja seeks revenge.
“The Square”(Sweden)Synopsis: The Square is a poignant satirical drama reflecting our times – about the sense of community, moral courage and the affluent person’s need for egocentricity in an increasingly uncertain world.
Social Media Marketing of Note: Off the back of winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes and Ruben Östlund’s popular Force Majeure, The Square garnered a lot of attention upon its autumn release across Europe.
“Loveless”(Russia)Synopsis: A couple going through a divorce must team up to find their son who has disappeared during one of their bitter arguments.
“BPM: Beats Per Minute”(France)Synopsis: 120 BPM. The average heart rate. The protagonists of 120 battements par minute are passionate about fighting the indifference that exists towards AIDS.
